The "Lethal Weapon" series is one of the few that still continues to be fresh after a fourth part. And they carry along something many other movies where a lot of things are blown up miss - action with a laugh and even a logical plot.
An explosive beginning once again kicks off the action for our favorite team of Los Angeles Detectives, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, in Richard Donner's `Lethal Weapon 4,' starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. In this fourth installment of the popular action/drama series, the pair are confronted with a murderous Chinese Triad with links to Hong Kong, that deals in counterfeiting and the smuggling of illegals into the country, where their new lives become nothing more than virtual slavery. It's a subject that touches a nerve with Murtaugh (Glover), which brings about an irrational decision when he thinks he can help. But not to worry; Riggs (Gibson) is there to back him up, and together they take on one of their most formidable opponents yet, Wah Sing Ku (Jet Li), head of the Triad, who happens to be in the process of discharging a personal agenda from which he will not be deterred. And making matters all the more complicated, Riggs and Murtaugh each have personal issues of their own to deal with: Murtaugh with his daughter, Rianne (Traci Wolfe), and Riggs with Lorna Cole (Rene Russo), the first woman with whom he's had a long standing relationship since the death of his wife. With three highly successful `Lethal' outings under their belts, it would have been easy for director Donner and his stars to phone this one in, make a few bucks and move on. But not these guys; Refusing to rest on their laurels, they deliver yet another exceptional, action-packed movie that maintains the quality and consistency of the first three. Gibson and Glover manage to take their characters to yet another level, keeping it all fresh and refusing to cruise through the comfort zone on auto pilot. Russo,well, turns in another winning performance; she and Gibson really click together, rivaling the kind of chemistry Bogie and Bacall brought to the screen. Their relationship is extremely well developed and handled with skill by Donner,is the entire story; it all moves ahead quickly and is never allowed to slow down or meander, which keeps the emotional level and tension high throughout the film. The action is possibly the best of any of the series, with some sequences so good they deserve comparison to John Woo's best. Jet Li is absolutely dynamic, and brings a real sense of menace to his character of Ku. For the first time, you get the feeling that Riggs and Murtaugh may be up against more than they can handle by themselves. And even with all this series has going for it already, in this one they manage to introduce yet another character that adds even more to their formula for success: Chris Rock joins the teamLee Butters, the next generation of law enforcement, an officer with a degree in psychology. He adds some humor to the proceedings, but more than that, he makes Butters likable and seems to have an immediate grasp of who he is and where he fits in. And fit in well he does, essentially becoming the third member of the team. Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) is backwell, this timea private investigator still trying his best to ingratiate himself with his friends, Riggs and Murtaugh. Interestingly enough, one of the more touching scenes in the film (near the end) develops during a conversation between Getz and Riggs, one that offers the audience (as wellRiggs) some insight into what makes Getz tick. <br/><br/> The supporting cast includes Steve Kahan (Capt. Murphy), Darlene Love (Trish), Eddy Ko (Hong) and Mary Ellen Trainor, reprising her role of Police Psychiatrist Dr. Stephanie Woods for the fourth time. Working from another exceptionally well written script (this time by Channing Gibson), Donner and Company have scored yet another triumph with `Lethal Weapon 4,' which can stand on it's own, ora part of one of the best action/drama series ever made. Which one of the four is the best? Toss a coin; these are movies the way they ought to be made. I rate this one 10/10.
This movie is exceptionally brutal, cruel, savage and without conscience – and that's just the comic parts. In contrast, the violent action sequences are quite entertaining.
While bemoaning the fact that they're getting old, LAPD detectives Martin Riggs (<a href="/name/nm0000154/">Mel Gibson</a>) and Roger Murtaugh (<a href="/name/nm0000418/">Danny Glover</a>) pair with rookie detective Lee Butters (<a href="/name/nm0001674/">Chris Rock</a>) to investigate a Chinese smuggling ring led by Chinatown crime boss "Uncle Benny" Chan (<a href="/name/nm0150976/">Kim Chan</a>) who has been smuggling in illegal Chinese slaves and counterfeiting Chinese currency. Meanwhile, Riggs' girlfriend Lorna Cole (<a href="/name/nm0000623/">Rene Russo</a>) and Murtaugh's unmarried daughter Rianne (<a href="/name/nm0938159/">Traci Wolfe</a>) are pregnant, and Leo Getz (<a href="/name/nm0000582/">Joe Pesci</a>) is back, now workinga private investigator. The Four Fathers—Michael Sing Ku (<a href="/name/nm0497056/">Conan Lee</a>), James Wing Chow (<a href="/name/nm0939480/">James Wing Woo</a>), Li Lum Chung (<a href="/name/nm0154236/">François Chau</a>), and (<a href="/name/nm0610332/">Raymond Moy</a>), whom Riggs and Murtaugh mistake"forefathers", are the four heads of the Triad, a Chinese syndicate that once ran organized crime in Hong Kong. Detective Ing Ny (<a href="/name/nm0432517/">Calvin Jung</a>) explains that, when the Reds took over Hong Kong, they imprisoned the Four Fathers. The Triad, currently operating out of Chinatown in Los Angeles and headed by Uncle Benny and the ruthless Wah Sing Ku (<a href="/name/nm0001472/">Jet Li</a>), is attempting to "buy back" the Four Fathers from a corrupt Chinese General (<a href="/name/nm0497086/">Dana Lee</a>) who snuck the Four Fathers out of jail and had them shipped to America in return for payment. The most obvious reason could be that it was to show that Riggs was getting older. Also this film was known to have been fast-tracked from pre-production to final release: filming began in January 1998 for a summer 1998 release and so it could be that Mel Gibson just didn't have time to grow his hair back. Also, in Lethal Weapon 3, everyone was ragging on him to get a haircutit was the '90s. So it's likely he just finally caved and decided to get with the times. Murtaugh explains to Riggs during the final shootout in the harbor warehouse; that Ebony Clark, the author of the "cheesy sex" novel that Lorna was reading earlier in the movie, is actually Trish. Riggs and Leo make it to the hospital to find Lorna writhing on a gurney and about to give birth but refusing to do so until she and Riggs can be married. Riggs says okay, so Leo runs off to find a minister, priest, or anyone who can marry them. As the nurses wheel Lorna into the delivery suite, Leo returns with Rabbi Gelb (<a href="/name/nm0508844/">Richard Libertini</a>), who quickly pronounces them "man and wife." Having been raised Jewish, Leo grabs a urine cup from a nearby patient, dumps the urine in the sink, covers the cup with a towel, and makes Riggs step on it to complete the ceremony in the traditional fashion. Lorna is then wheeled into the delivery room. Riggs follows after giving Leo a big hug. Later, Riggs goes down to the nursery to view his new son and is joined by Murtaugh and Butters viewing their new baby girl. Leo buys a camera from a nearby vending machine, and Captain Murphy (<a href="/name/nm0434676/">Steve Kahan</a>) arrives with presents for the new mothers, restores Riggs and Murtaugh to their Sergeant status, and tells them that the Hong family has been given asylum. In the final scene, Leo gets a doctor to take a photo of the entire Riggs-Murtaugh "family". The 15-rated UK versions of this movie are heavily censored, and there is no 18-rated variant. Especially the fighting sequences were trimmed extremely and nearly 90 seconds are missing and 33 scenes were altered.
